LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ7) In school these days, it is often more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic.

In Lexington, there's also gardening. The Roots and Shoots Garden reopened today at the newly renovated Waddell Elementary School, where they use the garden to teach a range of subjects.

"What the children can learn in a garden is something that they love -- they feel that it's a place of wonder and surprise every time they come out here. They don't expect to find little butterflies or hummingbirds, but they always are surprised," says Roots and Shoots founder Molly Brown.

The Roots and Shoots program has been going on at Waddell for 22 years.
