BEDFORD, Va. Bedford County's top teacher is a world traveler who brings her experience to the classroom.

Crystal DeLong was named Bedford County teacher of the year Wednesday at the Boonsboro Country Club.

DeLong has been a teacher for 18 years, with 12 of those years spent in Bedford County Public Schools. She currently teaches World History, Advanced Placement Government, and Comparative Government at Liberty High School.

DeLong taught overseas for six years and says her time outside the United States continues to influence her work.

"It really impacted my worldview and I work to try and expand my student's worldview as well to make them 21st century learners," DeLong told WDBJ7.

DeLong will compete against other teachers in her area for the Region 5 teacher of the year award from the Virginia Department of Education.
