Local group raises awareness about keeping teen drivers safe during holidays

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Youth of Virginia Speak out About Traffic Safety report teens killed on Virginia's roadways increased dramatically in 2016. The organization is reaching out to schools in the area to give teens and parents safety tips.

"With the holiday campaign we supply the schools with materials," said Casey Taylor of YOVASO. "We have pledge banners, tip cards, and an online pledge."

The YOVASO team is working hard to reach as many drivers under the age of 20 as possible.

"Tips for parents, I would say it's important for them to set the example," said Taylor. "Your teen is watching you behind the wheel. If you text or speed, then they are going to think it is ok."

The organization wants to encourage parents to talk with their young adult about driving responsibly and signing the virtual pledge.
