LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A Lynchburg City Schools principal is being recognized for Excellence and Innovation in Education.
Karen Nelson leads the students at Perrymont Elementary School.
It is the third highest poverty school in Lynchburg, which provides some unique challenges. But under Nelson's leadership, they have closed the school's achievement gap by more than 40 percent.
"The change to our master schedule which reduced the amount of time in whole group instruction which allowed us to spend more time in small group instruction and then really using student achievement data," said Principal Nelson.
Nelson is not done yet, though. She still has a goal for the school to receive full accreditation by Spring of 2018.
Nelson said it wasn't just her work, but the entire school's. She had teachers stand up to receive a hand of applause. Then, the students all gave themselves a pat on the back as well.
She gave each student who walked by her a hug on their way out.
