LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Young athletes from three different states were reaching new heights at a competition in Lynchburg Saturday.
Rise Up Climbing hosted a preliminary event for the USA Climbing Capital Region Championship.
More than 80 climbers between the ages of 7 and 18 participated. They spent three hours navigating various obstacles on Rise Up's 40-foot wall.
Every successful climb helped them earn points and prepare for tougher challenges in future events.
"Climbing is a lot of fun, so it doesn't feel like you're getting a workout," said Damien Bartholomew, owner of Rise Up Climbing and an organizer of Saturday's event. "They are honing their skills, which will overlap into other areas of their life."
Climbers who compete in two local competitions like the one held in Lynchburg Saturday will be eligible for the regional climbing championship in Richmond next month.
