Lynchburg community holds fundraiser for man with rare condition

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A man diagnosed with a rare condition is now asking the community for help.

Discitis put Alex Wood in the hospital for over two weeks with an infection that almost turned deadly. Abscess formed on his spine that made it extremely painful to move.

Wood's diagnosis came at a time when he did not have health insurance. His friends have decided to host a fundraiser with food, multiple bands, and a silent auction to help with his medical bills. The event happens Saturday night at the Waterlick Moose Lodge in Lynchburg. Tickets are 10 dollars at the door.

Wood acknowledged that there are a lot of people in this community who are sick and he is lucky to have the support.

"Overwhelmed, I mean it's just unreal. The love from family and friends and the community is crazy," said Wood.

His condition has improved and he is now able to walk, but he can not bend over or even put his own pants on. An IV entry point remains in his arm so he can receive medicine to fight the infection.

With more than 100 thousand dollars in medical bills, it will be an uphill battle.
