Lynchburg receives grant to fight poverty

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Lynchburg has been awarded a $117 thousand grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia's Community Wealth Building for Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF).

The city has been working for years to help reduce the number of people living in poverty. The grant will make it easier for those struggling to find employment.

According to the city's Assistant City Manager John Hughes, "we're really looking at empowering our citizens to be resilient and financial responsibility is a big part of that."

The grant also provides funding for a part-time and full-time employee to work with the families.
