Man identified in Smyth County crash

SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) -- According to Virginia State Police, one person died following a tractor trailer crash on Interstate 81 North near mile marker 43 in Smyth County Thursday.

The accident happened around 4:20 p.m. Police say the impact of the crash caused the trailer to catch on fire.

The driver's remains were recovered from inside the trailer.

Virginia State Police have identified the man that died in the tractor trailer crash as James T. Barricks, 67, of Lynchburg, Va.

Police say a tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-81 when it failed to brake in time for traffic ahead that had slowed. The tractor-trailer rear-ended an International tractor-trailer traveling in front of it.

The crash caused the tractor-trailer to run off the right side of the interstate.
