MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) If you live in Martinsville and don't have working smoke detectors, you could get them installed for free.

The Martinsville Fire Department is heading out Saturday to canvass the city. Department members will be knocking on doors, alongside the police department and Red Cross, to make sure smoke detectors are up to code.

"There is absolutely no reason, whatsoever, that every home in the city of Martinsville, as well as surrounding areas, that there aren't working smoke alarms in there. This is the cheapest life insurance that anyone can have," Martinsville Fire Chief Ted Anderson said.

The fire department will be doing this on the third Saturday of every month from now on. You can also call the department to set up an appointment.
