Martinsville Fire wants people to 'PASS' when using a fire extinguisher

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?

The Martinsville Fire Department wants to make sure you do.

Chief Ted Anderson says it may seem like a simple task but many don't know how to use it properly before they find themselves in an emergency.

So, the department set up a little demonstration for WDBJ7 outside of the fire house.

Firefighters say it's as easy as the word, P.A.S.S.

PULL the Pin
AIM the hose at the base of the fire.
Then, SQUEEZE the trigger
and SWEEP, side to side.

Chief Anderson says only do this, if you feel safe and comfortable using the extinguisher and everyone is out of the house or away from the fire.

"So by being comfortable, by using one, knowing how to use one and how to check a fire extinguisher that could be the difference in 5 dollars worth of damage versus 50 thousand dollars worth of damage not to mention what it can do to somebody," Martinsville Fire Chief Ted Anderson said.

The department is offering free "how to use" fire extinguisher classes.

The chief says any business owners, boy scouts or other civic groups can set up a time.

But anyone can stop by if you have questions and the firefighters will go over it with you.
