MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Food Lion is closing one of its stores in Martinsville, the company announced on Wednesday.

The company did not renew the lease for the store on Commonwealth Boulevard.

The store will close on or before Sept. 20. It opened in April 1978.

There are three other Food Lions in the city of Martinsville and one in Henry County. .

Shoppers outside the store on Wednesday say the closing worries them and is a big inconvenience.

"It's ridiculous. I don't know why they are closing. It worries me, it's going to affect the town as well people will loose their jobs probably, cause they don't have enough employees probably to switch to all the stores," Customer Ashley Raines said.

According to a representative, about 35 associates are employed there and most will be offered positions at nearby stores.
