MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) The Martinsville Police Department is using its bike patrol unit again.
Staffing issues made the bike patrol less prevalent in 2016.
Now, there are two sergeants assigned to the unit.
They will be out on patrol every day, weather permitting.
The department says people respond well to bike patrol.
"It seems like they're a lot more willing to come up and talk to us because they see us just as who we are, riding a bicycle. We're more approachable that way instead of being in a car with the window down, or up, and just throwing our hand up at them. It's a win-win for us and the public," says Sgt. Lane Clark.
The department will also be targeting high crime areas with the help of a new crime data system.
