Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department to donate fundraiser money to Harvey victims

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) One hometown volunteer fire department is trying to help out another that is suffering after Hurricane Harvey.

The Martinsville volunteer fire department holds two fundraisers each year, and that supplies the majority of their funds.

This year, they're donating all the funds from this Saturday's fundraiser.

The fire department calls it toll gate.

Firefighters stand in an intersection as cars drive by, stop and drop money into boots.

The fire chief says they are seeing tough times right now, but not as tough as those in Texas.

"You're not in it for the money. You're in it because you want to help people and seeing the devastation even this far away, you're not just watching it, you're feeling it," says Martinsville Fire Chief, Ted Anderson.

The toll gate will be held from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday at the intersection of Commonwealth Boulevard and Hooker Street, right by Martinsville High School.
