Martinsville home catches fire after lightning strike nearby

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Fire officials say a lightning strike that hit a tree behind a home may be to blame for a fire at the home.

It happened around 2 a.m. Friday morning at a home on Hillcrest Avenue in Martinsville.

Authorities speculate by looking around the area that lightning hit a tree behind the house, the electricity followed the tree roots and made its way to the house's gutter, catching the home on fire.

The family living there got out ok, but 11 pets died in the flames.

The family is currently being assisted by the Red Cross.
