MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) A City of Martinsville inmate who walked off a work crew Tuesday morning has been caught, but not before making it across the state border.

The search for Milo Miles began around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when he left an inmate work crew in the Axton area of Henry County.

Martinsville City Sheriff Steve Draper says Miles went to a home and asked for a ride to a store in Eden, North Carolina.

Law enforcement went to the store, saw him on surveillance video, and found Miles nearby.

Miles was in jail for failure to pay restitution and was expected to be released within months.

The sheriff says he believes the people who gave Miles a ride did not know he was an inmate.

Miles will have to be extradited from North Carolina.
