MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) A new deputy chief has been promoted at the Martinsville Police Department.

Robert Fincher has been with the force since 1994 and has worked his way up the ranks.

He says although he isn't from Martinsville, it's always felt like home and he couldn't imagine serving the people anywhere else.

"The community relations here is unlike I've seen at most jurisdictions and I've had the opportunity to meet and work with a lot of different agencies and different departments and I really think we have something special here at Martinsville," says Fincher.

Fincher says he hopes to continue the progress the department has made in reducing crime.

He took the spot of Eddie Cassady who was recently promoted to police chief.
