McAuliffe says 'no evidence' supports Soering pardon request

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia's Governor says there's no reason to pardon a man convicted of a notorious murder in Bedford County.

Jens Soering is serving a life sentence for the 1985 murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom. Soering claims he is innocent and he's been trying to get out of prison for years.

On Friday, state officials rejected Soering's parole request for the 12th time.

Soering has asked Governor Terry McAuliffe for a "full pardon," but on Saturday, McAuliffe indicated he won't be granting that request.

"We look at these very seriously, because there have been wrongful convictions," McAuliffe said. "To date there is nothing in this case that would say for this person that it was a wrongful conviction."

In 2015, McAuliffe rejected Soering's request to be transferred to his home country of Germany.
