MONTGOMERY CO., Va. (WDBJ7) Monday is one of the busiest travel days of the year with 64 percent of vacationers hitting the road home after the holiday weekend.

WDBJ7 checked in with some motorists to see how they prepared for the long ride home.

"With the iPhone you can spot all the Starbucks en route, which equals strategic caffeine stops," said Joe Williams, who was driving from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Washington D.C.

"Plenty of rest breaks and making sure I have lots of fluids for the trip, water, Gatorade, and other snacks along the road," said Alan Mertz, who was driving from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Pennsylvania.

TripAdvisor says travel was up 6 percent this holiday weekend.
