CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) More than 40 kids from Montgomery County went on a shopping spree and it was all thanks the reigning Miss Virginia USA.
Ashley Vollrath, Miss Virginia USA raised money to give the kids a $60 gift card to Target. The title-holder and her group Hokie Heart Lending Helping Hands welcomed the kids and escorted them around the store.
"I've overcome a lot of things in my so I felt like this was a great opportunity to show them that you can do anything you set your heart to," said Ashley Vollrath, Miss Virginia USA.
Even before the crown, Vollrath volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, and the title allows her to continue her passion for service. "She's really taken us under her wing," said Michelle Dykstra of the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Virginia. "For her to go out of her way and do something as kind as this and solicit sponsors for this to bring Christmas to all our students is really incredible."
The time with Tech students means more to the kids than just presents, Vollrath hopes the moment brings joy and teaches the kids about the season of giving.
" It's incredible to have them so excited about this opportunity and getting to come out here and pick out some Christmas toys with them," said Vollrath.
