Montgomery County to give $540,000 in added funds to Public Schools

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) Montgomery County Public Schools will be getting a one time funding sum of $540,000 following a vote by the County Board of Supervisors Monday night.

The vote comes nearly five months after the Board of Supervisors reduced the funding to MCPS in their budget talks by $540,000.

The funds will come out of the County's carryover funds.

School Superintendent Mark Miear said in a letter to the Board of Supervisors, the School Board made employee compensation the top priority in it's budget talks. However the approved raises resulted in getting rid of money for school buses, capital improvement finds, and technology equipment.

Miear's letter said the request to get the money followed the consensus of the Board of Supervisors during budget talks.

The Board of Supervisors approved the $540,000 amount, as MCPS said it would use $204,400 to continue roof replacement and repair projects, $147,900 to support continued improvements in hardware, and $187,700 to replace two school buses in the county's aging fleet.
