More than 1,000 students get free school supplies

ROANOKE Co., Va. (WDBJ7) More than 1,100 kids lined up for the 11th annual Back to School Blast held by the Rescue Mission. The students were given everything they need to start school off on the right foot.

Kids got a chance to pick their own backpack filled with school supplies like pencils and notebooks. Some were fitted for a free pair of shoes. Parents were also able to ensure their child got a free physical and immunization.

Stacy Boris, Rescue Mission: "When you see the families that come in, you see the relief on the parents faces that are strapped financially, they have assistance. Then you get to see the huge smiles on the children's faces when they select their own bookbag, it just gives them a sense of confidence, builds their self esteem up. They know when they get on the school bus that they are prepared," said Stacy Boris of the Rescue Mission.

More than 500 volunteers took time to ensure the event was successful. The Rescue Mission will begin accepting donors for next year's event soon.
