CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A major charity event in the New River Valley that helps hundreds of people during the holidays is in need of help itself.

The United Way of Montgomery, Radford, and Floyd needs turkeys for this year's Thanksgiving Meal Box Program that helps local low-income families.

A lack of turkey donations from the community has put the organization far behind what it's typically used to seeing this time of year.

Last year the organization helped

"We would love for 150 to 200 turkeys to come in just through asking our friends on Facebook and our email that we sent out because, like I said we are in desperate need of those turkeys," said Rachel Pearson with the NRV United Way.

People who like, share, and comment on a post from the organization's Facebook page will be entered for a chance to win Virginia Tech men's basketball tickets.

Donations will be collected through next week.
