New child porn charges on Roanoke man accused of touching self near school

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A man arrested for exposing and touching himself near a school in Blacksburg is now also charged with possessing child pornography.

Roanoke resident John Darrell Willard, 48, now faces eight felony counts of possession of child pornography. He is also facing older misdemeanor charges of indecent exposure, actual or simulated act of masturbation, and obstruction of justice.

Willard is a registered sex offender who has been convicted in two other sex cases.

Back in April, Blacksburg Police responded to Margaret Beeks Elementary School for a suspicious man outside the property. According to a search warrant, police saw Willard touching himself while watching children outside the school.

After police caught him, they found child porn on his cell phone. Police also searched his computers, leading to the additional charges he now faces.

In the early '90s he was convicted of aggravated sexual battery in Campbell County. His two victims were both under the age of 13. He faced rape, forcible sodomy and indecent liberties charges that were all decreased with a plea agreement.

Around that same time Botetourt County charged him with carnal knowledge of a child. He was convicted for having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old he met at Roanoke's Valley View Mall.

Willard is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bond.
