New law would allow dogs in Virginia breweries, wineries

SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) A new law would allow dog owners to bring man's best friend to Virginia breweries and wineries.

The bill sits on the governor's desk and -- if signed -- will allow dogs in those establishments.

Companies can opt out, but Olde Salem Brewing Company owner Sean Turk says he'd love to bring his dog Pawlis in since he's working long hours.

"As a new business owner, obviously I work plenty of hours and run home from time to time to check on him," Turk said. "To be able to have him here is going to be a lot of fun."

Turk says a lot of his customers have asked about dog regulations, and this new law would line up nicely with bright summer weather.

"That is something that we are definitely looking forward to telling the customers about," Turk said. "We're going to have some outdoor space as well. So in and out… It's going to be a lot of fun."

The governor has until April 9th to sign the bill into law. If signed, it would go into effect July 1st.
