New school year brings new leadership in Roanoke County Schools

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ7) Ken Nicely started as a Spanish teacher at Cave Spring High School 25 years ago.

Now he's leading the Roanoke County school system.

Nicely has been serving as the interim superintendent since July first. Thursday, the school board made the position permanent. Nicely says he's humbled, honored and excited to lead the school system he loves.

"When you've been with an organization for 25 years, and you've come up and you've invested your own energy and time, you love the place, you love the organization, you love the people and the community we serve," Nicely told WDBJ7 in an interview. "So having the opportunity to step into this role I'm honored and excited to jump in."

Students return on Monday, and Nicely says job one is getting the school year off to a successful start.
