ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Giles made the short trip down 460 to Blacksburg and Bill Brown Stadium where the Spartans hoped the single wing would hum from the season's outset.
The Bruins with a tall task against the Spartans, who finished last year at 11-2. Giles won last year's meeting by 28 points. This time around it was much closer.
Blacksburg trailed by 7 just before the half, until Will Justus lowered his shoulder and crosses the goal line from 2 yards out. We're tied at 14 at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Giles jumped back out in front. Brandon Chapman took the snap and got the touchdown. They get the 2-point conversion after and led the game 22-14.
The Spartans didn't want to sit on that lead. On 4th and 2 from their own 46, they went for it. Ryan Beidleman broke loose and took it 54 yards to the house. A missed extra point put Giles up 28-14.
Blacksburg kept fighting from behind. Grant Johnston dove over the pile from a yard out, bringing the Bruins within 7 with 6 minutes to play.
Giles hung on to win 35-28.
