A death investigation is underway in Northwest Roanoke after a body was discovered in a yard in the 2400 block of Delaware Avenue NW.
Roanoke Police received the call at 7:13 a.m. Monday.
The neighbors who called police explained to WDBJ7, they had heard gunshots Sunday night. When they went outside the next morning, they saw a body of what they believed at the time to be a young man lying in the yard next door. Police are not releasing age or gender details about the deceased individual.
Police confirm they got a call about shots fired at Forest Park Blvd NW and Grand Ave NW just before 11 p.m. on Sunday. It is unclear if the shots fired call is related to the death investigation.
According to a police spokesman, the person lying in the yard was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body will undergo an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The yard where the body was found was roped off with crime tape as investigators collected evidence to determine the cause of death. The scene was cleared as of 1 p.m. Monday.
Joeannah Vines returned to her home only a block away from where the body was found around 1:30 p.m. and was completely unaware her street was the scene of a death investigation earlier that morning.
"I'm surprised," she said. "The kids may be a little rowdy, but they are not murderers,"
She explained the half of the street where the body was found is little rougher than her side of the street.
"This end is mostly retired people, nurses, school teachers."
She hopes foul play was not involved.
"I'm just wondering who it is. I just wonder if I know the teenager because I do know a lot of the children that come up and down [the street]".
The identity of the person found will be released once the proper notifications are made.
Anyone with information should call the Roanoke Police Department at 540-344-8500.
