UPDATE: Authorities identify person killed in apartment fire; dog also dead

MARION, Va. (WDBJ7) UPDATE

The Marion Police Department has identified Lynda Darnell Hall, 72, as the person killed in a Tuesday night fire.

According to police, Hall's dog was also killed as a result of the fire.

Authorities say the fire has been ruled accidental.

One person is dead after an apartment fire in Smyth County Tuesday night.

At around 11 p.m. Tuesday, fire crews responded to an apartment complex on the 500 block of Chatham Hill Road in Marion to control a structure fire.

Crews arrived to heavy smoke as they searched the apartment. Marion police officers found one person inside the apartment and that person was taken to Smyth County Community Hospital where they later died.

Crews are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire Wednesday morning.
