Roanoke, Va. (WDBJ7) We're learning more about the woman who jumped over a fence and ran toward the Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport terminal.
The airport says its police investigators believe she was on drugs when it happened on Saturday, and she was seen waving to landing planes. She was spotted by a grounds crew member who followed the proper security training.
"The way that the protocol works is that anybody that is in a secure area has to have ID displayed at all times, and if you can't see the other person's ID and you encounter them in a secure area you are empowered and it is actually your responsibility to challenge that person to produce ID to show that they are actually supposed to be there," Roanoke Regional Airport Marketing Director Brad Boettcher said. "We don't expect this to be a normal occurrence, TSA was fine with the way we handled things and we feel comfortable with our security procedures that are in place."
The airport says she had no weapons and incidents like this are rare. The TSA is happy with the airports current level of security fencing.
