Police investigating Roanoke stabbing

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) The Roanoke Police Department responded to the 800 block of Rorer Ave. SW on Friday evening around 10 p.m. to investigate a report of an assault in progress.

When crews arrived at the location it appeared to be a crime scene at a residence.

Officers then found 39-year-old Jared Lance Shirley lying in the intersection of 9th Street and Rorer Avenue SW.

Shirley had multiple stab wounds and was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Officers also found the suspect, who is identified as Johnny Alton Harris, age 53 of Roanoke, inside the residence at the 800 block of Rorer.

Officials say that Harris and Shirley were roommates.

Harris had a slight wound to his upper body and was treated by medics at the scene.

Harris was charged with malicious wounding and taken to the Roanoke City Jail.

Officers have recovered a knife and box cutter form inside the residence.
