RADFORD, Va. In Radford, hundreds of people turned out for the Spirit of America celebration in Bisset Park.
They needed their umbrellas, during an afternoon that included several passing showers. But the rain did not stop the bands from playing or the people from turning out for the celebration.
Dana Jackson is the Vice Commander of American Legion Post 30 in Radford.
"The celebration of the fourth of July reminds us why we should be celebrating every year," Jackson told us, "because this was something that we couldn't just take for granted in the beginning."
Jackson and other members of Post 30 handed out American flags to young people who were attending the celebration. They said they hoped their gift would help to instill pride in what the flag stands for.
