Riner Fire Department looking for better radio equipment for mutual aid calls

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) A local fire department is trying to get new equipment to make it easier calling for help on big fires.

The Riner Volunteer Fire Department asked Montgomery County for funds to upgrade radio communications Monday night at the Board of Supervisors meeting.

It's expected to make it easier and faster to talk with Mutual Aid fire departments.

The Department said it will be a big benefit for the people they serve.

Fire Chief Jerry Saul explained, "We'll be able to carry just one radio versus two radios. We can't outfit the whole fire department with two radios, so the officers carry two radios and the firefighters just has one radio."

The County Board of Supervisors voted Monday night to hold giving funds to the department.

That is until the County Fire and Rescue Commission can discuss it at their upcoming meeting.

The Board will revisit the vote at the December 18 meeting.
