Busiest travel days here ahead of Thanksgiving holiday

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Friday will be one of the busiest travel days at the Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport, as folks get ready for the Thanksgiving holiday.

About a thousand people will be coming through here Friday, with about that many expected on Sunday and Tuesday.

If you are flying, make sure you get to the airport early. It'll be a bit busier than normal. Folks at the airport say you should arrive 90 minutes ahead of time for a domestic flight and two hours early if you're flying internationally.

Also, make sure you use that time in the checkpoint line wisely. Have your boarding pass and ID ready and empty your pockets. Also make sure any liquids in your carry-on are 3.4 ounces or less and fit in a clear, plastic quart-sized resealable bag.

Bring medications in your carry on in case your checked bags don't make it. Locally, the airport encourages you to double check your bags and make sure they're clean, so you don't run into any unexpected snags.

Brad Boettcher, Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport, said, “Every once in awhile you'll get somebody that uses a bag when they go to the gun range or when they go camping and you'll find stray rounds of ammunition in there sometimes. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen enough to let people, definitely double check that bag.”

Unfortunately, it's a little late to get TSA Precheck for Thanksgiving, but you can definitely get it, and the benefits, for Christmas.

Boettcher said, “And even if the precheck lane isn't open here or at the airport that you're flying out of, you do get the expedited services so you can keep your shoes on, you can keep your belt on, and it just makes the travel experience a little bit easier when you're going through those lanes.”
