Investigation underway after inmate found hanging in Roanoke City Jail cell

ROANOKE, Va (WDBJ7) The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office and the Roanoke City Police Department are investigating the death of an inmate.

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Roanoke City Jail.

A Roanoke City Sheriff’s deputy found inmate Roy Wayne Foley unresponsive and hanging in his cell by his bed sheet.

Authorities say deputies initiated CPR and called medical staff and 911. Medical staff initiated CPR as well as an AED.

EMS also responded to the Roanoke City Jail and administered
lifesaving procedures that were unsuccessful.

Foley was pronounced dead just after 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation.

Foley was processed into the Roanoke City Jail on Monday.

He was being held without bond on multiple charges including grand larceny, forging public records and felony possession of a firearm.
