ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) -- The construction of a new 21-million dollar school building is underway.

On Wednesday, city leaders broke ground at the site of the new Fallon Park Elementary.

The new school will be built in three phases around the existing school.

Students will move into parts of the new building as they are completed.

City leaders say the new school will be built to last for at least five decades. “This school will serve as a beacon to this community that will benefit our youngest citizens for decades to come; 50 years," said Mayor Sherman Lea.

The first phase - a two story, 26 classroom wing - is scheduled to wrap up by December.

The entire project should be completed by 2020.
