UPDATE: Deputies arrest man who escaped custody in Roanoke

According to Roanoke City Police Department's Facebook, Richard Thomas Hale, 36, of Vinton was arrested by Bedford County deputies after he escaped Roanoke City Police custody Saturday night.

Roanoke City police are searching for a man they say escaped from a cop's car after being arrested.

According to a press release, an officer stopped a car on Saturday around 7 p.m. for a traffic violation on 9th St. and Bullitt Ave S.E.

A passenger in that car, Richard Thomas Hale, 36, of Vinton, had an outstanding warrant for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

Hale was arrested and placed in the back seat of the officer's vehicle. The report started the officer went back to the offender's car to collect additional evidence. When the officer returned to the police car, Hale was no longer in the back seat.

Police established a perimeter and searched the area for Hale but were not able to find him. Anyone with information on Hale's whereabouts is asked to call 911.

Hale is described as being 6' tall and weighing about 200 pounds. Hale was last seen wearing a green flannel shirt and jeans.
