Roanoke County police warning of power bill phone scam

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ7) The Roanoke County Police Department wants to warn the public about a power bill phone scam.

The police department received three calls referencing a man identifying himself as an Appalachian Electric Power employee. The man goes on to tell the person over the phone that their power bill is past due and if they don’t pay by prepaid cards immediately, their power will be cut off.

Police say that AEP and other utility companies would not demand payment over the phone like this.
