Roanoke changes brush collection rules

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Some new changes are being made to brush pickup in Roanoke.

Originally, the city was picking up brush piles only if they were four feet high, wide and deep but no larger than six feet.

There were several complaints from residents that their piles were not being picked up and a sign on the piles would say too large or too small.

Now, all piles will be picked up but the city would prefer smaller piles to be disposed by residents.

"If you have a small pile of brush that's maybe one foot by two feet or one foot by three feet please pick it up with your hands and put it in your dark blue trash can," said Solid Waste Division Manager, Skip Decker.

Decker says four extra workers were hired and more brush and bulk will be picked up which will cost $77,000 a year.

The city will pick up brush piles every week along with three bulk items.
