ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Tuesday night, several neighborhoods across Roanoke took part in National Night Out.

Neighbors enjoyed food, music and other attractions at community parties.

The purpose of the event is to strengthen crime and drug awareness and the relationship between police and the people they serve.

"They're very important, especially when the police are here, especially with everything going on around the world, to know that every place is not the same and to draw some good attention to the cops and not so much bad," said Erica Robinson.

"It may be nice for the police to get to know the people they protect," said Maxwell Currie.

More than 15,000 areas across the country participate in National Night Out.
