Roanoke juvenile accused of trying to kill her newborn child

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) A juvenile in Roanoke is accused of trying to kill her newborn baby.

Police responded to the 200 block of Harrison Ave. NW on Thursday, January 5 to investigate suspicious circumstances involving a newborn. Officers were told that a juvenile had recently given birth at home.

The juvenile initially denied that there was a newborn, but an officer heard the baby in her room. The officer found the child inside a closed plastic container.

Crews took the baby and the juvenile to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The juvenile is charged with attempted murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and felony child neglect. She has been released from the hospital and is now at Coynter Springs Detention Center.

We don't yet know how the baby is doing.
