Roanoke medical facility improves comfort for breast biopsy patients

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Roanoke doctors are trying to make a difficult procedure more comfortable for patients.

Carilion Clinic is adding a new "biopsy chair" at its Breast Care Center in Roanoke.

The chair will allow patients to sit upright instead of flat on their back during a biopsy.

When a patient is comfortable, they move less and make it easier for technicians to complete the procedure.

The chair also gives physicians more flexibility in how they work on the patient.

"It allows us to raise the chair, so that the physician doesn't have to bend over to do the procedure," said Eileen Kenny, medical director of Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center. "If our patients get light headed, we can lay them down quickly."

Money to purchase the biopsy chair was raised by motorcycle riders during last year's Smith Mountain Lake Poker Run.
