ROANOKE, Va (WDBJ7) UPDATE:
We learned on Monday that Benjamin Chastang was indicted on five counts for three robberies. On Tuesday, WDBJ7 learned that he was involved in a standoff with Roanoke County police last week.
Investigators found a gun and clothing consistent with the BNC robbery.
The FBI is investigating two other local unsolved bank robberies in Roanoke County and Christiansburg.
WDBJ7 has confirmed that Roanoke police have solved a string of bank robberies in the city.
A grand jury in Roanoke indicted Benjamin Chastang on five different felony robbery-related charges on Monday. One of them was a bank robbery charge. He's facing two counts of robbery for crimes committed Dec. 12. Chastang is also facing a count of robbery and one attempted robbery for Dec. 27. And one count of bank robbery for Jan. 30.
Those dates all correspond to robberies at BNC Bank in Roanoke last month, and robberies at SunTrust and BB&T Bank in December. A search warrant names shows a sample of Chastang's DNA is being compared to a mask found on the scene.
Chastang is a convicted felon and police discovered that he was in possession of a firearm. He is being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail with no bond. Roanoke police believe he will be served on the most recent charges Tuesday.
Two other robberies remain unsolved in Roanoke County and Christiansburg. The robbery in Christiansburg is being handled by the FBI. It's unclear if Roanoke City is assisting the FBI, but a spokesman says it is assisting Roanoke County.
