Roanoke roundtable focuses on international media partnerships

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Local media organizations are helping an international non-profit look to the future.

WDBJ7 and Wheeler Broadcasting are two local companies that have partnered in the past with independent media in Ukraine and Georgia.

IREX, the International Research and Exchanges Board, coordinated the exchanges. On Friday representatives of the organization gathered at the digital agency Firefli in Roanoke to consider how the program can continue to thrive.

Maya Mateshvili is the Senior Program Officer for the Georgia Media Partnership Program.

"I think everyone who has gone through our exchange program in both countries it has been a life-changing experience," Mateshvili told us. "On a very grass-roots level I think they make ties with professionals in the U.S. that continue beyond the program."

IREX is working to recruit more U.S. broadcasters for its international partnerships.
