Roanoke woman raises money to save coworker's dog

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Shannon Keener works at Visit Virginia's Blue Ridge. She comes in early- but not as early as Betty White.

White’s the custodian, she's also one the happiest people you'll ever meet.

“You know, you have a conversation with Betty in the morning kind of brightens your day,” Keener said. “She's just so sweet and positive. And even though I know she has things going on her life. She never shows it."

One of those things, happened back in September of 20-16.

White’s pitbull, Baby, tore his ACL and it was going to cost about a $2,500 for the surgery.

When Keener heard about it, nearly a year later, she knew she had to help. So without telling Betty, Keener started a Go-Fund-Me page and raised $561.

It was less then they needed, but when the gift was presented to White, the amount didn't matter.

“I was in shock,” White said. “I didn't know what to say. It was a blessing."

And the blessings kept on coming when White found a vet in Amherst who did Baby's surgery for less than the quoted price.

“I told him I had a donation of $561,” White said. “And he said that was the amount he need for the surgery.”

Keener said she was excited when she learned that Baby was going to be okay. “I'm glad it all worked out for them. They deserved it.”
