Rocky Mount Police Officer involved in non-fatal shooting

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WDBJ7) The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office is investigating after an officer was involved in a shooting in Rocky Mount late Saturday night.

The Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Rocky Mount sent a news release saying shortly before midnight, a Rocky Mounty police officer located a man with a pending emergency custody order.

Less than an hour earlier, a Franklin County magistrate had issued the order to commit that man into custody for medical evaluation.

The officer stopped his vehicle to approach the man at the Rocky Mounty Plaza on Tanyard Rd., and they say, the man began physically assaulting the officer. The officer then fired at the man.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, and the man was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

The officer was also taken to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained in the assault. That officer was treated and released.

The officer is on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the inquiry, per standard department policy.

This is an on-going investigation.
