Salem elects first female sheriff

SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) There's a new sheriff in Salem -- and she's making history.

April Staton will be the city's next sheriff. She's the first female to take the post in Salem's history. She was in a 6 way race and ended up winning about 45 percent of the vote. She says this has been accomplished through hard work. Staton hopes to set a good path and example for younger women.

April Staton, Salem Sheriff-Elect, said, “I've done this in what's considered to be a man's world and we did it and we did it big and that's what I wanted to do. “

There's no swearing in date yet, but she says that will happen by the end of the year.
