School commuters to expect delays in Christiansburg

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) The Town of Christiansburg has been working to extend turn lane lengths at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and North Franklin Street, in effort to improve traffic flow since June.

Construction was expected to be mostly complete by the late summer to avoid impacting school traffic, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the construction will continue throughout the month of August.

Parents and students are advised that during the time of the construction, traffic in this area will be restricted to one lane in both directions when school returns on August 9. The turn lanes from North Franklin Street onto Independence Boulevard will remain open.

Christiansburg Police Officers will be on site to monitor traffic. All entrances and exits to the school are expected to remain open, but drivers should expect delays.

Commuters and residents who use the intersection are asked to take alternate routes during the time of school departures, which are between 7:30 a.m to 8:05 a.m. and between 2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The Town of Christiansburg ask drivers to be aware of these delays and to drive carefully through the work zone.
