The demonstration was called "Bridge the Gap" and took place at 10 a.m. Several participants were demonstrating on behalf of schools in the New River Valley.

Some Virginia Education Association members marched to "bridge" the funding gap in three areas: one, create realistic standards; two, increase teacher salary to attract and keep teachers; and three, increase spending level per pupil. Demonstrators believe the standards of quality are not realistic.

"We've grown frustrated at the difficulty every year funding our schools, we're all fighting over the same scraps and we don't have enough invested i nour children here in southwest Virginia," educator Steven Lavery said.

VEA members say this will be the first of many events to raise awareness.
