Some Roanoke locally owned businesses will be open on Thanksgiving, others won't

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - Most locally-owned small businesses will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but a few have made the decision to stay open for the holiday.

The Roanoke Co+Op grocery store has decided to stay open on the holiday for the first time in its recent history.

"Thanksgiving is always one of the busiest weeks of the year," said Roanoke Co+Op Spokesman John Bryant.

"We think being a food holiday, we think it's important to be open just a few hours so you can come in and get those few extra things."

But they only made the decision after seeing if some of their employees were okay with the idea.

"We wanted to make sure it was very clear that the folks that wanted to be here and say they are willing to do that it's not like something we made them do."

At Willow Tree Antiques, owner April Weaver says it wasn't a hard decision to close the shop for the holiday.

"You know it is time to be with your family on Thanksgiving. We think that is important, so the store will be closed," said Weaver.

She says her vendors like the idea.

"I think that most of them have thought it was important, saying I'm glad you are going to be closed on Thursday."

If you were hoping to practice some yoga at most studios like Utarra Yoga Studio on Thanksgiving Day, you will be out of luck.

"So we think it is a day you should spend with your family," said Yoga Instructor Sally Wesley.

She says all of their clients have been supportive of the decision.
"If someone is that into it, they will be practicing on their own tomorrow."
