RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) State police are asking for the public’s help after an improvised explosive device was found on a Radford University intramural field.
A university maintenance worker found the device Wednesday near a trashcan at the volleyball court. Around 12 p.m. Wednesday, state police bomb technicians arrived at Radford University and rendered the device safe a short time later.
The device is believed to be a type of firework.
The incident is still being investigated by Virginia State Police and Radford University police.

Yesterday, Radford University staff noticed a suspicious device at an intramural recreation area (a volleyball court), which is located off the main campus complex, and during a time when the location was not being used by campus patrons. Radford University police responded, assessed and secured the scene. Out of an abundance of caution, RUPD notified Virginia State Police. The suspicious device was quickly assessed as not being a threat to the campus community and was quickly suspected of being of a pyrotechnic (firework) nature. While the incident remains under investigation, there has been and continues to be no information to indicate a threat to Radford University.

The Virginia State Police and Radford University are seeking the public’s help with an ongoing investigation into an improvised explosive device recovered Wednesday (June 15, 2016) from a Radford University intramural field.
At approximately 12 p.m. Wednesday, bomb technicians with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office responded to the scene in the 300 block of E. Main Street in the Town of Radford. A university maintenance worker discovered the suspicious-looking device near a trashcan at the volleyball court. The worker immediately notified Radford University Police, who requested the assistance of the Virginia State Police.
State police bomb techs rendered safe the device. The incident remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police and Radford University Police.
